Tucked in the corner of a parking lot, about 100' from the road, I just barely caught a glance at it while passing. Looped around the block and pulled into the parking lot to get a better look. U.S. spec Fiat 600D !

I’ve said it before, and will keep saying it, the 600 is a better car in every respect than the 500, but people just do not give it due attention. It can actually seat four, and its water-cooled four cylinder is adequate for moving them as well.

The 500 didn’t sell well in the U.S., although Fiat did sell them for a few years during the height of the microcar fad in the U.S. - the 600 on the other hand was available almost until the end of its production life, only disappearing when the 850 became available here for 1968. While fiat didn’t sell many 600s per year, cumulative sales mean they’re relatively easy to find if you’re not picky about which version you want. The late-model 600D being the strongest/most refined, and the early 600 being the quirkier more stylish variant.

I’ve experienced them first hand in the guise of a SEAT 600. That was one of those cars that was a broken down jalopy but just kept on going. Going slowly , but going nonetheless.

The 600 was available all the way up to 1982 here so you still see a few running around as it was hugely popular back then. Even one of my neighbors has one and it has a very cool sound. The 600 was  probably more important than the 500 in most places outside Italy.

I do quite like the 600 - very cool car! I think a lot of people like the 500 over the 600 despite the practicality / power bump the 600 has because of it’s quirks (size, air-cooled engine), etc.

The larger engine in the 600 put out something like 28hp, which would’ve been slow but OK for a larger car. That’s part of the reason I like the FIAT 126 - mechanically, it’s almost exactly a 500 underneath down to the air-cooled engine, but the engine has been uprated to 24hp or so and considering the car is pretty light, it’s not too bad (also synchro gearbox compared to the 500's crash gearbox!)
